St. Tropez

St. Tropez, France was our first rental car port. The rental car office wasn’t too far from the port. They gave us a Mini Cooper! Cool! It was an automatic and perfect for the roads here. We drove to Frejas a hillside town that was interesting. The town was founded by Julius Cesar in 31 B.C. and the warships that defeated Anthony and Cleopatra were built in this town. We looked around the town some and then headed for our next stop. We drove to Grimanud which is a Provencal village that was once owned by the Grimaldi family and there were some ruins of an old medieval castle there.

On to Ratatouille, a hilltop village with wonderfully narrow streets and clusters of ancient forfeited houses. It was really neat. We looked at the 17th -century Romanesque church with the Monument to the Resistance in the center of town. Wandered in and out of the alleys and it was a nice stop.

Then it was on to Gassin which is another elevated village with spectacular views of the Saint-Tropez Bay and Maures Mountains. Gassin was our favorite stop of the day. We wandered around there for quite a while looking at the old houses and churches. A very enjoyable stop.

After returning our rental car we looked around St. Tropez and were amazed at the number of huge yachts in town. I can see why it’s called the playground of the rich and famous; but it’s not a stop we would make again. It was just too glitzy for us.
