O.K. I know I’m way behind in my blog - but we have just been so busy!!!! Barcelona - the place you think of for bullfights! Actually we heard that in 2012 they were going to discontinue the bullfights. Apparently the younger people don’t attend the way the older generation did.
We had a private tour here. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and Spain’s second-largest city. It was founded by the Phoenicians. The Gothic Quarter was designed by Antonio Gaudi and a lot of the buildings certainly represent his style of architecture. We wandered around the old section of Barcelona and of course its most famous promenade, La Rambla. La Rambla is a huge pedestrian street lined with shops and souvenir stands. There were also a lot of people out dressed as mimes and some of them had wonderful outfits on. The street was packed with people. Unfortunately Barcelona has a horrible reputation for pickpockets and the local police were out in force watching for the pickpockets and gypsies. It was a vibrant town and I can see why it’s so popular.
We also drove to the Monastery of Montserrat. It was about an hour’s drive to get there from Barcelona. It’s set high on the mountainside amid some unique rock formations. They are pillars of stone and the location has a breathtaking view. We were there in time to hear the boy’s choir - La Salve Choir - which is Europe’s oldest boy choir. It’s also the location of “the Black Madonna” which is a revered wooden statue of the Virgin. The lines to see it were very long so we didn’t wait, but it was a beautiful location and we would go back if we had the opportunity.
