Ibiza

Sunday - August 29th. We were lazy all day! We spent the majority of the day in a cabana on the ship reading, relaxing and dozing. About 3:00 p.m. we headed into Ibiza. Ibiza, Spain is known to be a party island and huge vacation spot for Spaniards and Europeans alike. Sure enough, we saw all of the ferries with long lines of people headed back to the mainland after their weekend on the island.

We caught the shuttle down to town and then proceeded to walk to Dalt Vila which is the highest part of the city. One thing you can say about these trips, you definitely get in your walking! The island was established in 654 B.C. and later came under the control of Carthege. It was subsequently occupied by Moors after the fall of the Roman Empire so needless to say it’s been around awhile.

Dalt Vila is the part of the city that remains surrounded by an old wall. There are a few “gates” you can enter the old city through. The gate actually looked like an old drawbridge complete with statutes and a cobblestone entry. So we wandered up the narrow, small streets and climbed to the top which gave us a panoramic view of the ocean and city. It really was a beautiful view. The walls used to be fortified and you can see why it at one time protected the city. As with most cities, it had a beautiful cathedral at the top. Unfortunately for us - it’s Sunday so the church was closed and we didn’t get a chance to see the inside. After wandering around, we headed back down.

We found an ATM and replenished our supply of Euros. As usual, no issues which was really good. We caught the shuttle back and then relaxed on our cabin’s verandah and watched one of the luxurious yachts unload its passengers and take on board its two shuttle craft. It was a relaxing day so we feel a little refreshed now for our trip to Barcelona tomorrow
